Garo Section of Seventh-day Adventist
The Adventist truth came to the Garo Hills in the early part of 1950s through the Adventist magazine called the “The Present Truth.”
In 1945, Mr. Piperson D Marak from Rajasimla village of Garo Hills was the first person to learn about the Adventist message from this magazine. This was found in his brother’s suitcase which was kept for about 15 years. He read the whole contents of the message and was fully convinced about the Sabbath truth of the Bible. He first started sharing the newly found truth to his wife, and later on to his relatives and friends.
In 1954, Mr. P K Gayen, the first Adventist Missionary and along with his team members were invited to this same village. They conducted Bible crusade and gave a series of Bible studies to the people. As a result of the crusade 34 people accepted the message and became the first believers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
It took years for the penetration of Adventist message to other parts of Garo Hills. It was not an easy task for the pioneers to sow the gospel seed to the people. The believers faced lot of criticisms and prejudices; even they went through tortures and persecutions. But this does not stop the spreading of the gospel message; the truth found its way and reached to the hearts of the people. Now the gospel message is fast spreading to every nook and corner of Garo Hills.
As a result of great sacrifices and contributions made by our pioneers, Lay men, Volunteers, Evangelists and Pastors, now the church is growing. Today we have 46 organized churches, 142 companies and 68 isolated church members with the present total church membership strength of 15685. We have altogether 78 working forces serving in schools, fields and church administration.
